How wine has become modern

World culture of wine is the drop, swirling, the beating heart of the exhibition sensory "How wine has become modern "in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). He drew a chic wine appreciators worldwide. The exhibition is the first of its kind in assembling various media and art forms - graphic and industrial design, architecture, performing arts, visual arts and film - in a celebration psychotropic overlap between art, culture and wine. Each screen shows how the viticulture, winemaking and wine tasting served as inspiration for artistic creation across cultures and countries.

Here are some thoughts about my favorite "samples" of Exposure:

  • In [] Veritas, by Peter Wagner. This mural 70 feet long is a mind map consists of 200 colors related to wine and different terms. Lovers of language will enjoy this playful representation of the evolving terminology around wine. As the circle of international wine connoisseurs continue to grow, the words used to describe the wine moving to accommodate a wider range of taste buds and cultural references.
  • The Judgement of Paris photomural display includes a scale that describes (in) famous Paris tasting of 1976, while evoking Da Vinci Last Supper. It seems that French judges are considered to Jesus in this analogy - and Thus the British journalist Stephen Spurrier would be Judas. If you've seen the movie "Bottle Shock," you know about the betrayal of 1976, when Stephen Spurrier sneaked a few jokers from California in a blind tasting of French wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy. Many French wine experts " grief, many California wines outperformed the Grand Cru Bordeaux and white Burgundy. Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 1973 When and Stag Leap Wine Cellars' 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon were pronounced the winners, chaos ensues. In addition to the striking mural, the two original bottles of wine tasting are exposed.
  • Soil. This installation combines soil samples from 17 vineyards in the famous wine-producing countries such as Germany, South Africa, Spain, France, Chile, Argentina and California. Wine geeks, geologists and language alike can enjoy this exploration of the famous terroirs, gleaning information about their different climates, humidity and soil structures, etymology and translations of their place names and quotes winemakers on the somewhat abstract notion of "terroir".
  • Precision viticulture. This projection by Diller Scofidio + Renfro a technique that highlights the icon Napa Opus One was used to monitor and map the vines growth and disease. Opus One combines aerial photography with multispectral remote sensing technology to keep an eye on each breast vine in their individual vineyards popular. This projection is seen against a white film on the floor of the gallery. The multi-colored patchwork of plots is as beautiful as it is amazing, an expression "science-meets-quilt" or "landscape painting with infrared". No wonder that the wine Opus One is one of the highest quality in the world.
  • Wall Label. For fans of graphic art is a display of more 200 bottles of delicious explore common themes for wine labels from around the world, such as "good and bad" animals, "woman", the weather (no surprise, many California wineries such as "fog" on their labels), humor, science and sober and minimalist reports art. Famous French Mouton Rothschild estate is given center stage with his series of labels of art, each designed by a famous artist commissioned by Baron Philippe and later Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. Picasso, Miro, Chagall, Kandinsky, Warhol, Motherwell and recently Charles Prince of Wales are among the privileged artists who designed for Mouton, since the introduction of this tradition in 1924. A lesser known fact is that each artist Featured receives a case of the popular Premier Grand Cru vintage for which they created the label. A label dedicated to the first vintage Opus One is also on display, adorned with signature Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. It's quite the collectible.
  • Decanters Riedel Decanters by Crafty and Strange by Etienne Meneau. These pitchers can be difficult to handle, but their charm is readily apparent. Ships storing and serving wine have been an inspiration since the dawn of winemaking. Whether it's ceramic pots, the classes of crystal, Jeroboam glass bottles or bowls of earth, wine has traditionally been honored by beautiful containers. These carafes about the pleasure of watching the wine, and the prelude visually before the tasting. Connoisseurs talk about wine as if it were a painting - that describes its color and delicate qualities focus, clarity and color depth, and viscosity of a brush-trail as it leaves the surface of crystal. This display celebrates the beauty vision and brilliance of wine - you can forget the settling techniques and adequate oxygenation for a while.
  • "Spill." This short film art is certainly intoxicating. Creator Dennis Adams explores the streets of Bordeaux while cradling a glass full of red wine, perhaps a cabernet from the region. The strange, dreamlike narrative similar to the Freudian free association is superimposed on the visual Adams purple-stained white suit. Voice Underwater sounds like he speaks from the depths of your mind, swirling all French cultural references, literary and artistic reviews and poetry. The video is subtitled in French. This must have been a monologue incredibly difficult to translate. Chapeau (The Hat) for translators here! Warning - "Spill" can make you drunk.
  • Smell the wall offers an intimate encounter with seven different wines, each focusing on a particular aroma or fragrance that can usually be found in specific combinations of grape variety and terroir. Some of Featured flavors include anise, cat pee, and pepper gas. The wines are in bottles of perfume on a transparent wall. This project staged a show gold and purple light on the other side of the wall, extending an olfactory experience in visual art. This display also explores the role of language in the development and structuring of our sensory experience. For example, the "essence" was a particular word challenge critics have mostly stopped using to describe the wine, because of its negative connotations.

An amazing amalgam of experiences sensory and vinous works of art, this exhibition is a bold, unique and refreshing. Art of Wine creates begets art: a perfect circle. Or spot wine, as it was.
