Beyond Manhattan: The Hudson Valley
Although Manhattan Island is world famous for its monuments, restaurants, and cultural offerings, few venture beyond its borders. Yet the Hudson Valley, rich in natural scenery and historic attractions, can be easily explored in a day or two and is only a short drive from the city.
Located on the Whitestone Bridge, the 150-mile valley, Yonkers race down to Albany, New York and divide by the Hudson River, is composed of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, which was established by Congress in 1996 to recognize, preserve, protect and interpret the history of national importance and resources Valley for the benefit of the nation. Four primary north-south access routes in the area: State Parkway and Route 9 on Taconic the east side and Route 9W and I-87, also known as the New York State Thruway, on the west side.
Driving on the Whitestone Bridge in a recent visit in the fall, which seemed to connect two diametrically opposed worlds, I felt like I was disconnected from the congestion city and said, deposited on the Hutchinson River Parkway, the threshold for rural New York State and beyond, the grass field of the aerodrome barnstorming Old Rhinebeck. Navigating Route 9, which curve between shale and autumn-burned, colorful trees, I parallel to the surface blue-reflection on the Hudson River, which the West Bank increased to Bear Mountain in a collage of colorful bursts of trees. The ruby red, appearing as flames, dominated the palette, while burn as oranges, as if like pumpkins in bright sunlight, were almost luminescent. The gold medals, far more subtle, have was rich, while yellow and green soft light seemed to cling to late summer. The road overshadowed two topographic limits and seasonal.
Irvington, one of the first historic sights of the Lower Hudson Valley, was named for Washington Irving, author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, and was the location of the house gable and weathervaned, Sunnyside. Philipsburg Manor, near Tarrytown, was a 18th century farm and flour mill.
Van Cortlandt Manor, dating the late 1600s and the house of the governor of New York's first lieutenant, was developed as a major tourist attraction with its taverns of 18th century blacksmith demonstrations and home cooking. The City of Stoney Point, a strategic revolutionary war fort, is situated on the River.
The Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, is a sculpture park outdoor featuring contemporary works by Calder, Moore and Noguchi.
The Hudson-lasting Bear Mountain Bridge, which leads to the Hudson Highlands, accessed from both Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks on the west side, while the Academy U.S. Military at West Point, located on the east side, is the oldest military academy in the nation, identifiable by the stone niches on its shore.
Newburgh, situated on the river in mid-Hudson Valley, was the site of the last river is west of Hudson ferry before the current Newburgh-Beacon Bridge was built in 1963. The historic district, the site of the Dutch Reformed Church 1835 designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, also included Washington headquarters, the oldest publicly owned historic house museum and the site of his residence during the 16 months of the Revolutionary War. The cantonment near New Windsor was the home of his troops.
Hyde Park on the east side of the river, was the birthplace of Franklin Roosevelt Deleanor, U.S. President, and characteristics of Springwood, home Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, Val-Kill, Mrs. Roosevelt's retreat, Top Cottage, Hill retired president, and the Vanderbilt Mansion, the residence of 50 rooms of Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. Across the river, New Paltz, with its historic Church Street and stone house surrounded by a Huguenot, emigrated in 1690 commemorates the French settlement, itself only a few minutes from the Mohonk Mountain Victorian house, a National Historic Landmark, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve.
Old Rhinebeck airfield, located just east of the historic villages of Rhinebeck and Red Hook, is a living, early-Aviation Museum, with aircraft and engines of origin and provides air shows on weekends from mid-June to mid-October.
After walking through the woods, bridge-like entrance on a recent visit, the 1920-like barnstorming airport appeared before me.
An original 1909 high-wing, covered tissue Bleiriot XI arc into the sky, albeit briefly, from its rolling grass field scanning straddling both sides by red, orange October and yellow-painted trees reminiscent of the barnstorming 1910 and 1920 days, creating the illusion that this era of aviation had somehow been preserved and continued to play in the vacuum of time beyond the doors of the museum. Hangers, as if ignorance of the calendar, proudly braved winds, with names such as Albatros Werke, Farnborough Royal Aircraft Factory, AV Roe and Company, Ltd., and Fokker. But it was the multitude of mono-, bi-and triplane which more strongly struggled with its present design time.
Fifteen minutes flight in a 1929 New Standard D-25 biplanes are offered before and after the air show themselves, three of which I have personally taken during my many visits. Assuming a deafening explosion from its propeller and riddled with oil castor engine sputters, the D-25 gently lifted his rear wheel on the ground and surrendered its dual, covered with fabric wings to the sky. Bitten by tingling, wake produced Wind force in October which almost inhibited respiration, and periodically needle castor oil engine spits out, I looked on the wing. The ground, camouflaged by a dense network of orange, yellow, red and autumn trees-transformed, was also devoid of contemporary civilization that the biplane overcome the silvery surface of the Hudson River.
The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, located a few miles from Rhinebeck, crosses the Hudson River and has access to the reserve of 1,094-square-mile Catskill Forest, the location of three, 1,500 feet of the mountains which offer skiing in winter: Belleayre, Hunter, and Ski Windham.
So beautiful was the Hudson Valley was that she had given birth to a movement of 19th century painting called the Hudson River School of landscape painters, who had been triggered by Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, whose Persian style estate, Olana, is located on the west side of river. Painting directly from nature, these artists, among others, had created a visual that has expressed optimism, vitality and personal theology through color, light and perspective.
Dotted with vineyards, the valley offers the tourist the possibility to sample many local wines, New York.
Albany, with its modern-sculpture-like architecture, is situated in the Upper Valley the Hudson River and is characterized by granite French chateau built State Capitol. The state capital since 1797 and the second incorporated city America, it continues to operate under its charter in 1686 and has continuously served as a transportation center since the day Indian trail.
The Hudson Valley can also be enjoyed from Amtrak day, 381-mile route from New York to Montreal has called the "Adirondack" and considered one of the four rail travel the most scenic in the United States.
The next time you visit Manhattan, take the "short" ride on the Whitestone Bridge: you may take a "long" way ...

RED RIVER VALLEY
